The pier, terminating in a wide platform, is located in Northern Greece within an industrial area and serves the mooring operations of cargo vessels.
The primary objective of the lighting design was to ensure the safe movement of mooring personnel along the pier while achieving high lighting uniformity and precise beam control to minimize glare. The lighting distribution was carefully designed to remain confined to the pier surface, preventing unnecessary light spilling into the surrounding environment and reducing light pollution toward the sea. Equally important design priorities included low energy consumption and minimal maintenance requirements throughout the installation’s lifecycle.

The lighting installation consists of luminaires positioned along the length of the pier to support the safe circulation of personnel, luminaires mounted on pillars, and dedicated lighting for the platform where vessel mooring operations take place. In addition, narrow-beam floodlights are precisely aimed at the offshore mooring buoys, which function as floating mooring points located at a distance from the pier and are used when weather conditions prevent vessels from approaching closer to the structure. At the outer edges of the pier, luminaires with lower luminous output were selected to achieve a smooth distribution of light and maintain overall lighting uniformity.

The lighting calculations were carried out using dedicated calculation surfaces that considered the most critical viewing positions and operating conditions. The design was evaluated in accordance with international standards to verify adequate illumination levels for safe operation and circulation, glare control, high uniformity, and the limitation of light pollution toward the marine environment. Particular attention was also given to ensuring sufficient illumination of the offshore mooring buoys, even under conditions where their position changes due to wave movement.

All specified luminaires are weather-resistant and highly energy-efficient, providing a reliable, low-maintenance lighting solution with reduced operating costs.
